German Exchange Program
My students have no stopped talking about the visit of six German students to our school on October 18th. The German students told me that they felt like celebrities because all the students wanted to talk with them and take their picture. It did not take long for the students to realize that they all had a lot in common. It turns out that the early college is set up a lot like the high schools in Germany.
I got a chance to visit the high school in Salzgitter-Bad, Germany in June 2009. When I was teaching in Martin County, I was the teacher sponsor for the program at Roanoke High School. I feel like this exchange program is a wonderful opportunity for both American and German students to learn about other cultures. Once students are able to put faces and names to a group of people, it is a lot harder to hate.
