Historic Bath, NC
Several months ago I began volunteering at the historic site in Bath, NC. Bath is the oldest town in North Carolina and has a fascinating colonial history. I wanted to learn about the site so that I could incorporate more local history into my classes.
This summer I volunteered for history camp, where I taught 8-12 year old students what life was like for colonial children. We spent one day learning about the chores performed by poor children and then one day learning about the expectations on children born in elite families. The experience really encouraged me to bring more hands on activities into my classes.
Before Christmas, Bath sponsored the first candle light tour of the Palmer-Marsh House. I had a lot of fun dressing up in colonial attire and performing for the visitors. I hope that this will become a part of my holiday tradition.
