Bridging Cultures

Bridging Cultures

I spent the summer traveling throughout Southeast Asia so that I bring back educational resources. When I returned I participated in a cross-cultural program with 20 visiting international secondary educators participating in a Fulbright program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Campaign.

The Beaufort County Early College High School held its first Talent Show on March 23rd as a fundraiser for Relay for Life. The Interact Service Club planned the event to help raise money as well as bring awareness to an important cause. The show was hosted by sophomores Tanja Butler and Cindy Cruz-Loera.

Mindy Davis, a local teacher at Bath Elementary and cancer survivor, spoke on why she relays. Davis said that a recent report found that Beaufort County had the largest number of people diagnosed with cancer in eastern North Carolina. She talked about how the money raised through Relay for Life would go to help cancer patients and their families.

The students showed off a range of talents from singing to dancing to a magic act. The judges, Emily Pake, Ginger Jefferson, and Sharon Peek, had a tough time picking a winner. Eric Martinez and Jessica Williams tied for second place. Sydney Moore with her rendition of John Legend's "All of Me" won first place.
