Selma, Alabama

Selma, Alabama

In college I read Along Freedom Road in which David Cecelski wrote that the SCLC considered focusing it's voting rights on either Williamston, NC or Selma, AL. Since then I have spent years investigating the similarities and differences of these two towns. Walking through the streets of Selma I was both thankful for the efforts being made to preserve this national landmark and grateful that Williamston doesn't have to carry this heavy burden.  As I walked with the other tourist across Edmund Pettus bridge I couldn't help but wonder what the locals thought of us. Are they proud of their past or is it a source of shame? Do they like the attention or do they wish this past would stay hidden?
